Each investigation held state institutions accountable and drove meaningful change. The news orgs accomplished this despite growing obstacles to public records and access to government officials in a challenging news and business environment, a Collier Prize survey showed.

Third prize ($2,500) is awarded to @IllinoisAnswers
for Strapped Down: “Restraint Chairs in Illinois’ Jails,” which exposed the overuse, misuse and abuse of restraint chairs in county jails across Illinois.

Second prize ($5,000) goes to @NBCNews
and @TelemundoNews for “Dealing the Dead,” a year-long NBC News investigation into the body brokering industry.

Their reporting showed the deplorable conditions many prisoners face, and resulted in major businesses, including Trader Joe’s, McDonald’s, and Home Depot, to change their practices or launch internal investigations.

The $25,000 first prize goes to Margie Mason and Robin McDowell of the @AP for "Prison to Plate," a project that exposed how deeply the U.S. supply chain relies on prison labor.

The award (second prize is $5,000 and third is $2,500) recognizes the deepest and most impact reporting on state-related institutions and programs in the U.S., is open to all platforms and is presented at the prestigious White House Correspondents Association dinner.

The Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester, New York earned third prize ($2500) its revealing how the government’s shortcomings in preparing for, communicating and responding to the 2022 Buffalo blizzard resulted in tragedy.

Second prize and $5k went to @pubhealthwatch.bsky.social and several partners for “Toxic Texas Air,” which showed the state’s environmental regulator knew about but failed to stop high benzene emissions from a chemical site for nearly two decades in an unincorporated, majority-Latino community.

In 2024, the prize was won in a collaboration by the @texastribune.org, @ProPublica.org and @frontlinepbs.bsky.social on the tragic mishandling of the active-shooter situation at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
