We stand with Tumbler Ridge.
It has been confirmed by media that the murderer in question is Jesse Van Rootselaar, an 18-year-old trans woman with far-right ideologies. I've been able to confirm that they had Nazi symbols on their Twitter profile, including racist tweets and death threats towards Indians. Van Rootselaar's behaviour in no way reflects the behavior of trans people as a community, and we unequivocally condemn both her actions and attempts by far-right and right-wing media and social media to blame trans people, as a group, for the fact that this shooting occurred. Difficult conversations will have to be had in the next few days. We, as a community, stand with Tumbler Ridge, and stand in solidarity with each and every one of the persons injured in this senseless, heinous act, and the families of each and every one of the persons whose lives were cut short. We equally reject any attempts at instrumentalizing this shooting to blame a minority group, already the targets of countless heinous acts and B.C.'S first-and-only ever use of the notwithstanding clause of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, for this act.
