My tradition is starting the year with a big doorstopper history or biography. About a quarter of the way into Napoleon: The Man Behind the Myth byAdam Zamoyski, and it's really good, clear and engaging prose, very focused on the human being, not the legend.

I knew amongst the Sondheim encomiums, I wanted someone to make the connection with Shakespeare, not just as the Best Ever, but in the way they transformed what they inherited.

It hasn't really even been possible to be racist against Irish people in the United States for at least a century or so, but the Republicans are just so darn good at being racist they somehow found a way.
