Notoriously tired.
Oh no.

Does the culture secretary know this?

Does the culture secretary know she is the culture secretary?

You don’t have to stop there.

It’s so wild.

Yeah, I was about to say: the US mortgage market is crazy (from a UK perspective) - 30 year fixed rate mortgages being the norm with no exit charges meaning people refinance as soon as rates drop - and they’re not even *that* high: 6-7%

Maybe not if it’s only happening to non-white people and the government and media are pushing suggestions that the victims deserve it because they’re criminals or immigrants.

I’m deeply sceptical that “this couldn’t happen here” or in the other 2 western democracies where I’ve lived.

What guardrails?

A recent report has the chatbot say it’s going to contact a human than go ‘nah man, I can’t do that.’

This is the closest thing to media behaviour in a traditional moral panic.

I don’t think anyone actually knows how rare they are - the longitudinal data on suicides doesn’t cover the uptake in AI yet.

Nor do we know if they’re AI led - though the examples of AI records showing charbots encouraging suicidal ideation and providing advice on what to do are pretty damning.

It’s similar to the adoption of the pocket calculator/computers I suppose.
November 8, 2025 at 8:37 AM
?? Suicides are pretty pernicious.
November 8, 2025 at 8:35 AM
Yes, I’m hopeful that there’ll be some attempt to build decent regulation once the AI bubble bursts and the Trump administration collapses.

Unfortunately I think the lighter the impact of both the less likely it is we’ll get effective legislation.
November 8, 2025 at 8:34 AM
No, but that’s because those things have been getting a lot of investment and making their friends lots of money.
November 8, 2025 at 8:32 AM
Oh! I see about the hallucinations. I’m not sure that’s really a moral panic so much as exasperation with people who seem to be convinced AI tells you the truth when it clearly doesn’t.

Oh, there’s one more concern: the impact on education from students using AI to write essays etc.
November 8, 2025 at 8:31 AM
Everyone is afraid of legislating around AI because they don’t want to burst that bubble and they don’t want to kill their only hope of reelection.
November 8, 2025 at 8:29 AM
Yeah, but this is tied to the massive investment bubble that has built up very quickly around AI and the fact that our government’s entire plan for fixing the economy consists of “something to do with AI”.
