Ten years ago I was a kid who had nothing, and now I’m an Ivy League professor at the top of my field, and there are days that I liked being nobody a whole lot better. You can sternly tell yourself in the mirror that it’s all for the work, but so far, I don’t really think it’s helped mine get done.

It would almost be comforting if there was one overarching plot line that consumed every powerful tier within every field. But there’s a hundred of these threads, to different degrees, that will never even take down two men. The culture of money, power, parties, and prestige is hyperendemic

For at least some of 2025, the US IHR focal point was even still submitting flu notifications to WHO - although I don’t know if there’s a publicly confident statement I can make about whether that’s still true
