Every day is a school day. I learned even more about this place on a guided tour of Carlisle Castle. A medieval fortress, royal palace, seat of government, prison and military barracks. The amazing stories make this a real gem in the city’s long history.

Sat quietly in the woods today and this was my reward. 😊

A poignant end to the day at Carlisle Castle, commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Veterans, cadets and young people of Rocket Theatre paying tribute to the memory of those who served. #VEDay80

Wonderful to join veterans and our local community at Currock Community Centre for afternoon tea and an illustrated talk by Stephen White, about the home front and VE Day celebrations in Carlisle 80 years ago. #VEDay80

The only picture I have of Mum in her RAF uniform, here with two of Dad’s sisters Fay and Mary, we think at a family wedding in September 1945. It would have been nice to be able to talk to her today about her memories. Very proud that she played her part. #VEDay80

A lovely Easter Sunday walk in Bitts Park. The strong smell of wild garlic in the woods, the sights and sounds of the river and birds, bright colours emerging in the gardens and Carlisle Castle peeping over the hill.

A fabulous spring day to visit @wwtworldwide.bsky.social Caerlaverock to say ‘goodbye to the geese’. In a few weeks the barnacle geese who have been spending the winter on the Solway, will leave and head off to breed at Svalbard, between Norway and the North Pole.

In poet’s corner at @carlislecathedral.bsky.social the great Cumbrian writer Norman Nicholson watches over everyone who enters and leaves the cathedral. His former home in Millom is to be made into a fitting tribute to his life and work.
