I’d say it’s surprising because he wasn’t 1st team all-pro (which IIRC is voted on by the same body). Meaning there were a good number of voters that put Lamar as the best QB, but then voted Allen for MVP. I’ve heard that this is the 3rd time ever that MVP wasn’t 1st team. That’s pretty surprising!

Follow up: to be clear this question isn’t meant to pigeonhole your points into a stat vs vibe argument. It’s just a thought that’s sat with me. Especially since a similar line of discussion comes up with the NBA as well (especially as it relates to Jokic vs others)

Thanks for the read and explanation! Awards season often times feels like a conflict between valuing advanced metrics vs eye test/vibes. In your opinion, has there been a trend in voting to more-so favor advanced stats? Or do you think memory and momentum will continue to be the primary force?
