RIP Rob Reiner. He made so many great films, but two have become part of my comfort films; I’ve seen When Harry Met Sally and The American President more times than I can count (and I’m sure The Princess Bride isn’t too far behind).

Day 30 #NoirvemberChallenge Favorite #filmnoir ending

There are so many great endings, but the ending of Scarlet Street really blew me away. It’s so incredibly bleak and an unusual way to meet the requirement of punishing the wrongdoers.

#NoirvemberChallenge Day 17
Favorite Film Noir Duo
Joan Bennett and Dan Duryea
So great at tormenting Edward G. Robinson…

#NoirvemberChallenge Day 16
Lesser-Known Film Noir Everyone Should See: I’m going with Zero Focus, a Japanese film that I saw at Noir City last year. It’s about a woman whose new husband disappears and she is determined to find out what happened to him; it was riveting.

#NoirvemberChallenge Day 15
Film Noir Character You’d Trust the Least with Your Secrets: I’m thinking Phyllis Dietrichson from Double Indemnity. She’d use anything she knew about you, if she thought it would get her ahead.

#NoirvemberChallenge Day 10
Favorite Gloria Grahame Noir
I love Gloria Grahame, so this one is tough for me. I’m going with In a Lonely Place because she plays off of Bogart so well. Although I’m very tempted to say The Big Heat because of *that* heartbreaking performance.

#NoirvemberChallenge Day 9
Favorite Dan Duryea Film Noir
Dan Duryea is one of the ultimate film noir sleezes, and so good in so many noirs. There’s only one choice for me, though: Scarlett Street. He’s so despicable as Kitty’s abusive, manipulative, grifter of a boyfriend.

#NoirvemberChallenge Day 7

Favorite Line in a Film Noir: It’s not my favorite (which would be something quippier), but I’m going to go with one that feels appropriate now, from The Big Clock. “Isn’t it a pity? The wrong people always have money.”

#NoirvemberChallenge Day 4:
Noir that was ahead of it’s time
I know it’s a neonoir, but I’m still disappointed that we didn’t get a series of Easy Rawlins films. Devil in a Blue Dress was not appreciated when it was released.

#NoirvemberChallenge Day 3
Movie That Made You a Noir Fan: Laura. AMC (remember when they showed classic films?) had a noir week when I was a teenager. It was the first time I’d heard the term. I know I saw more than one of the films, but Laura was the one that stuck with me.

I do want to acknowledge a less common choice, however. The introduction of Alice in The Woman in the Window. I love the way it takes a moment to realize that the woman in the portrait is now standing there. #NoirvemberChallenge

#NoirvemberChallenge Day 2
Best character introduction: That would have to be possibly the greatest character introduction of all time, the introduction of Harry Lime in The Third Man.

#NoirvemberChallenge Day 1
Best Opening Scene: There’s so many great ones, but, even though I know it’s the obvious choice, I have to go with the long, unbroken tracking shot in Touch of Evil.

What movie do you consider “perfect?”
September 20, 2025 at 9:03 PM
I’m glad to see some love for Barefoot in the Park in all the Robert Redford tributes. I know it’s not his greatest or most important film, but I’ve always loved it. “I nibbled, I didn’t pop.”

I brought in my birthday the right way, having it start during the intermission of Hamilton on the big screen

You’ve inherited a movie theater. What’s your first double feature?

This will probably change based on the day, but this is what I ended up submitting as my top ten of the quarter century.

Seeing on of my favorite movies today at @musicboxtheatre.bsky.social . It feels like a spring day, so I’m ready for some baseball…

Day 22 #NoirvemberChallenge

Favorite Secretary in a Noir: This one’s easy for me: Ella Raines in Phantom Lady.
November 23, 2024 at 2:56 AM
Day 21 #NoirvemberChallenge
Favorite Film Noir on a Train: My first thought is This Gun for Hire for the great scene between Ladd and Lake, but I can’t not acknowledge Double Indemnity…

Favorite Film Noir on a Boat: The Lady from Shanghai
November 22, 2024 at 5:46 AM
Day 20 #NoirvemberChallenge Favorite Line from a Film Noir So many options, but I’m going with Laura and one of Waldo Lydecker’s many great quotes “In my case, self-absorption is completely justified. I have never discovered any other subject quite so worthy of my attention”
November 21, 2024 at 4:07 AM
Day 19 #NoirvemberChallenge Favorite Film Noir with an Address Since I’ve seen a lot of people name noirs with a street, so that’s what I’m going to do. I love Scarlet Street. Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, and Dan Duryea are all incredible
November 20, 2024 at 1:03 AM
Day 17 #NoirvemberChallenge Favorite Film Noir Shot on Location Despite the plethora of great options here, there’s only one choice for me: The Third Man. It makes such great use of Vienna that it was what inspired my own trip to Vienna.
