1. A Game About Digging a Hole (2025)

Pretty much what you expect it to be based on the title. Scratches my autistic itch and humanity’s desire to dig holes. Structured just right for hour-long sessions and dirt cheap too. And in the end, it shows you why you don’t fall for capitalist scams.

Now heading into 2026. Media Thread for that year.

That’s it for this year’s Media Thread. Thank you for reading along. And I look forward to more media in 2026. Happy New Year!

El Guapo vs The Narco Vampires (2025 pilot)

An unabashedly crass, violent and sexual W.I.P cartoon that is dripping with Mexican influence and striking use of Catholic imagery. Yet amidst all this is some genuine drama. Jorge R. Gutierrez once again demonstrates his strong animation credentials.

The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974)

One of Rankin/Bass’s highest regarded specials, illustrating that the Christmas spirit is all about belonging and compromise. The Snow Miser and the Heat Miser are by far the best characters in the special as their dynamic and songs are unforgettably fun.

Gremlins (1984)

Drawing upon folklore, this movie serves as a vehicle for over-the-top gremlin violence and statements against consumer culture and over-dependence on technology. The animatronics and puppetry still hold up to this day. Remember to check your utilities for any wily gremlins.

Elf (2003)

Yet another holiday favorite that’s as funny as it is charming. Will Ferrell‘s slapstick complements the story of finding out where he truly belongs. He really embodies the curiosity of a child stuck in an adult‘s body. Though, Buddy needs work respecting people with dwarfism.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)

An all time holiday classic, featuring great animation, catchy songs and rhymes and a firm message against the commodification of Christmas. Something that’s been lost on companies given all the merch, ironically enough. No wonder the Grinch is like that.

Kirby Air Riders (2025)

The better Switch 2 racing game compared to MKW by virtue of going for a more arcadey feel and structure. Gameplay is even more intuitive and City Trial is an absolute blast. Road Trip offers some cool story as well. Masahiro Sakurai has pulled through as usual.

Donkey Kong Bananza (2025)

A very well deserved comeback for Donkey Kong, going all in on his brute strength and allowing for the ability to smash up the terrain and a CEO. Filled to the brim with tributes to past games and an epic finale.

RIP Mario timeline theorists. Y’all had a good run.

Mario Kart World (2025)

Have a bunch of mixed feelings on this one. The UI was annoying, the focus on Route tracks works better in Knockout Tour than elsewhere, and the open world plays it way too safe. The soundtrack however is top notch and some of the costumes were great. Still prefer mk8 tho

Welcome new Bluesky users! A little starting advice for y’all:

Scooby-Doo (2002)

The CGI looks rather underwhelming and the twist involving Scrappy-Doo felt forced, but it’s got some really cool monster designs and set pieces and Matthew Lillard totally nails at as Shaggy! The rest of the cast didn’t do too shabby either. James Gunn’s got the juice.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

Easily one of the most badass sequels ever made, upping the ante and boasting some truly impressive CGI involving the T-1000. It also illustrates that the most ethical thing you could do at the moment is lie to a cop.

Hasta La Vista, baby!

The Dancing Pig (1907)

It’s truly mind blowing that a silent film this old could have such an advanced costume. The expressions of the pig itself seemed so real it’s a little creepy. But at least he’s a nice guy after all. All in all, a charming short that also flexes its own accomplishments.

The Fresh Lobster (1948?)

A gleefully surreal silent film about a guy who dreams of being attacked by a giant lobster, boasting impressive costume work for its time and a solid blend of cel and stop motion animation. It also shows that hot dogs and seafood are not compatible with each other.

Ghostbusters (1984)

At first, I found its politics to be questionable with the EPA being presented as a jerk. Eventually, I settled on how the Ghostbusters themselves are rather shady and started appreciating the dry humor and impressive ghost effects. And that theme song will always be a bop.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

A chilling flick that blurs the line between dreams and reality while presenting it via the struggles of life as an adolescent in society. I was most afraid of the bathroom scene. Better not fall asleep there.

I pity the guy who got sucked through the bed.

The Terminator (1984)

An evergreen cautionary tale that warns against allowing A.I to become too powerful and also highlights the very real dangers of someone out there collecting information on you just to kill you. The special effects, while choppy, were quite impressive on a $6 million budget.

The Book of Life (2014)

The wood block visual style makes the film a real eye-catcher and is further bolstered by the numerous references to Mexican folklore. It could do with less pop-culture inserts, but that’s fine. Pretty good first outing for Jorge R. Gutierrez as a director.

Knights of Guinevere Pilot (2025)

Dana Terrace did well to strike out on her own, delivering a nicely animated critique of abuse in the entertainment industry. I must say, I’m absolutely all for the riffs on Disney after hearing about what they’ve done to Terrace along with all their other vices.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)

Easily one of Dreamworks’ best animated films, with satisfying visuals and a strong message of living life to your fullest no matter how limited your time on earth is. And I’ll just say it: the panic attack scene is executed in a very thoughtful manner.

The Bad Guys (2022)

It’s got an animation style that reminds me of Spider-Verse in the best ways as well as some crazy action choreography that’s almost anime-like. It also shows that doing good things is not only just, but simply feels a lot better than doing bad. Gotta catch the sequel someday.
