The Story of the Passenger Pigeon

The Passenger Pigeon was once so numerous that they would darken the skies when they migrated between the Great Lakes and the Gulf Coast. That was before extensive hunting and loss a habitat did them in.

Now they are just a story.

Holding on to hope. Even though the last confirmed sighting for this big woodpecker was in 1944. nonetheless, unconfirmed sightings pop up from time to time reviving interest that this bird might still be alive.

In the early 1800s, JJ Audubon crisscrossed North America shooting birds and then drawing and painting likeness. An 1833 trip to Labrador gave the man to paint the North ATlantic seabirds, like the two puffins pictured below.
