Segafredo coffees too!
No water valve? Annoying. On some designs it can lead to smelly steam too as boiler water doesn't change fast enough. Can be a big problem for larger commercial machines if hot water isn't used!

Looks that way. Once you get a crack in it you are close. A slight adjustment to get the timing right then. Look to make an espresso, 28ml, in about 28-30 seconds.. over extraction = dark crema and burnt flavours, under = pale, thin and bitter. Watch coffee to run back under the spout like olive oil

Try decaf coffee but look for "Swiss water treatment" on the label. Beans are decaffeinated using water and electrical current (simplified) but you get a good coffee without using chemicals. Look out for some teas, they can be high in caffeine too.

You could be right but I have seen them fail quicky. They have an internal solenoid that shoots forward and back that with a couple of valves provides a pump. Noise doesn't always mean it's working unfortunately

Big difference between espresso and plain coffee! But what is plain coffee? Instant? Filter? cafetiere?
I have to say it does matter what beans are used too.. an espresso machine expresses the flavour, something a bit bitter can become very sharp!

Cappuccino for breakfast. Espresso later.

I train people to make coffee with espresso coffee machines. The standard in the UK of espresso in particular is poor! I have a machine at home too.. don't blame you!

Could be just too fine if dripping through. Take some ground coffee in your hand, squeeze it making a tight fist. open your hand out flat. Esp grind will stay in one lump but crack once. More cracks - too coarse, one lump with no cracks - too fine

Hi Kelly, are you still getting the sound of the pump when making shots? I believe this model has a pump that usually makes quite a noise, kind of growly vibey noise! It's quite common to replace these small pumps.
Other than that or a blockage it's often the grind of the coffee?

I've tried many single variety arabicas (worked for a roaster for years) but for an espresso I still go back to a 70/80% Arabica blend + 30/20% robusta. Arabicas have distinct flavors but I love the rounded rich flavor of a blend. Imo the Italians still do the blends best!
