I think the Sox will shift into wait-and-see mode looking for a high dollar/short(er) year contract for at least one of the 1B/3B options.
Bichette would be perfect but will be pricey and the 2nd/5th round picks are steep.
I'm intrigued by a trade for deGrom similar to the move for Gray.

I think he fits the next 5 year window much better than the older FAs. Plug Mayer in at SS and move Story to 2B.

How about Bichette? The post-32-year-old-dropoff in performance for position players is chilling if those guys are signing 5+ year contracts.

I watched it with my kids when they were young. It really grew on me (but my kids were turd babies so they might have been the target audience).

But is it better than the ultimate SW sleeper pick... Star Wars Rebels?

That Texas logo is about perfect. Disappointed in the Mariners and Brewers work since they have some classics. Red Sox and Yankees just sticking with the classics. And it is amazing how long Chief Wahoo existed.

Thank you for the Mosi's Mooses reference... I had not thought of that sign in years. Do you have any memory of Mosi and other Pats doing a barnstorming tour of local high schools in Maine where they played basketball against local teams? I remember Mosi hitting three half-court hook shots.

Plus, we need to bring back the high top Pony cleats.

Weirdest stance ever... can't believe he hit 34 dongs in San Diego a year after leaving the Sox.

sorry- that should read +1 DRS. OAA on fangraphs was +3, down from +8 in 2024.
November 19, 2025 at 7:09 PM
Bregman was good but not great last year, with an OAA of +1. That could have stemmed from his injury, and you might have better fielding metrics, but if that is his new normal, I'm nervous about a 5 or 6 year deal. And Polanco, finally healthy, put up better offensive numbers than Bregman.
November 19, 2025 at 6:57 PM
I'd guess Polanco as a DH, a year further removed from knee surgery and coming off an OPS+ of 134, will be a bargain compared to Bregman over 6 years with his declining defense.
November 19, 2025 at 4:54 PM
I'm on board with Bichette but would like to see him at 3rd, Story and 2nd (where he was excellent in 2022 as compared to really bad last year), and Mayer at SS.
(preemptively, Bichette, Story, and Bregman had identical arm strength rankings last year according to savant)

So, the paid Woodruff a $10 million buyout, and now are on the hook for the $22 million salary for next year? Yikes.
November 19, 2025 at 1:04 AM
Looking at the Sox long competitive window, I'm cooling on signing Bregman, Alonso, etc. to huge deals. Sox gave more than 1000 ABs last year to players with an OPS of ~.630. Raise the offensive floor and go hard to improve the rotation and bullpen.

I enjoy almost all of your baseball posts and this one is excellent. Please tell the Red Sox front office to re-sign Refsnyder as he is one of my favorites.

[Continued] He does nearly all of his damage on fastballs, which is great until his bat speed slips a little bit … which happens with age. I don’t think he’s lost any bat speed yet, but it’s coming at some point.

Keith Law shares your concern: strikeout rate is in the bottom 10 in the majors, and he whiffs on breaking pitches over 40% of the time that he swings. His whiff rate on sliders alone was the 4th-worst in baseball this year. . . on curve balls, his whiff rate was 7th.

Is the thought that AZ wants to clear space to play Lawler in the infield? Marte puts up huge numbers and has a reasonable contract, so it is hard to imagine why AZ would want to trade him. It would also lock Story into SS for the next two seasons, despite his poor defensive ranking.

My rough math shows the following for Woodruff pull air % v. RHB:
2025: 17.6%
2023: 19.8%
2022: 15.1%
2021: 12.4%

Any numbers on Woodruff and Imai? I think they are my two preferred targets for the Sox.

AI tech is apparently (breathlessly) poised to reinvent our world... let's start with recognizing my kids' names on voice to text. It has been 15 years of me entering the same corrections every time.

I wrote "normal post-surgery velocity recovery" but you are right that there are a range of outcomes. The fact that Woodruff returned and pitched so well is a huge positive. This link is pretty informative if you're interested:

He had the highest strikeout rate of his career despite being down 2 mph on his fastball. Change up was still great. If the front office thinks the normal post-surgery velocity recovery will occur, he seems like a prime target.
