Soul Connection: Rough & Ready. 1988, Intrigue Records. A bit of a grail record for me. Still on the lookout for their other one. UK street soul, spare, quantized, and sincere. The kind of thing that Erlend Øye must have been going for on his first solo album. #SoulConnection #UKstreetsoul

I wanna go back to the 70s, when jazz musicians frolicked in the green fields & madding verdant gestalt. Genius trumpeter Hino is backed by an American band with bass maestro Ron Carter, drummer Tony Williams, and guitarist John Scofield. A little inside, but with funky modal energy & BIG drums.

I put this very clean $1 copy of Afterburner on the turntable today, and the overlap of synthesizers, beatboxes, and hot licks that once seemed commonplace now sounds completely left field to my ears. How did they pull this off?
