woensdag 19 februari Zijn aardgasleidingen ook te gebruiken om waterstof te distribueren? Daar zijn de meningen over verdeeld. Aardgasbedrijven hebben fraaie rapporten uitgebracht, waarin ze uiteenzetten hoe geweldig geschikt hun eigen gasleidingen zijin om waterstof te vervoeren. Ze zijn klaar voor de groene waterstofrevolutie, zeggen ze. Maar deskundigen twijfelen hieraan. Waterstofmoleculen zijn de kleinste moleculen in het universum. Laat je miljarden van deze deeltjes door een stalen aardgasleiding stuiteren, dan zullen een hoop moleculen zich nestelen in kleine holtes in het metaal. Dit tast de structuur van het staal aan, waarna scheurtjes en lekkages volgen. Alleen een beschermende coating aan de binnenzijde van elke leiding kan dit probleem voorkomen. Maar het aanbrengen van die laag is een dure klus. Een tussenoplossing is om een mengeling van aardgas en vijf tot tien procent waterstof door de leidingen te sturen. Dat vereist minder zware aanpassingen. Maar ook dan zijn de huidige leidingen dus niet 'ready-to-use'.
