I'm in a similar situation with some ideas I've always wanted to do since I was young.

I've had to rework many plot points, characterization, motivations, messaging, and even shift focal characters because I'm just a different person 15-20 years later.

But I still love where those ideas came from.

I think "active community discussion" is a big part too. Some haven't gotten to a point yet where they've returned to a finished series years later and find that yes, there're still fans out there (your age!) engaging with it.

It's not the same feeling as being "there at the time", but still valid.

That's such a good point and would make sense. I think it's those types of fans' way of feeling validated about their own headcanons, theories, assumptions, and even suggestions. So as long as something is releasing, there's that possibility—along with active community discussion.

Maybe this is related: I'm noticing a lot of young people begging for new content from creators instead of making fan work themselves. You have everything you need to engage in the universe of a finished series in imaginative ways, alone or with other fans. You can't feed yourself?
