Carter G. Woodson, came up with the concept of “Negro History Week” in 1926, intended to “both create and popularize the knowledge about the Black past.”

Woodson, whose parents were enslaved, grew up to be an author, historian and the second African American to earn a Ph.D. at Harvard University.

As the first Black woman elected to Congress, Chisholm was a barrier breaker in every sense of the word.

First woman ever to run for a president parties (she ran as a Democrat).

Her campaign slogan of “Unbought and Unbossed” continues to be a rallying cry for women in politics everywhere.

Thomas Edison's original invention by patenting the use of a carbon filament which made possible the widespread use of electric light in public and at home.

Donna Jean Barksdale, an 11-year-old who was one of the first Black students to integrate an all-white school in Arkansas back in 1955.

This wasn't that long ago just 70 years since Black children were even allowed to sit in the same classrooms as white kids.

Faubourg Tremé situated north of the French Quarter in New Orleans, it was home to the first civil rights movement, the first Black daily newspaper, black businesses, and more.

The neighborhood is often left out of history books in spite of its very rich and important history.

Black fur traders helped establish Fur Rondy in the 1930s, one of Alaska's most beloved traditions.

Black whalers navigated the waters of the Pacific Ocean to reach Southeast Alaska in the 1840s.
