So I remember recently hearing a fanon interpretation of Arthurian lore. That King Arthur was face-blind, and thus Merlin's magic of appearing as a child, an older and younger person, and such, were achieved by disguise and clever positioning.
It would also explain mistaking Morgana for Guinevere.
