A Happy Animal who is hopelessly in love with this art-infused world
Short video of me jamming in the Phrygian Dominant scale (taking liberties with my note choices in a few places). This scale is used widely in flamenco music. It is also colloquially called the "Hava Nagila" scale, due to its use in the immensely popular song played at bar/bat mitzvah celebrations

“Art-making encourages self-exploration & expression. It encourages more vulnerability through art being an expression of oneself. By externalizing their emotions & thoughts through art, they may feel less judgment and/or shame toward themselves. ” Natasha Green, art therapist.

Found objects become art when the artist uses improvisation to compose a unique arrangement. This particular artist is also a musician / songwriter who uses the same creative approach for all of his artistic ventures. Make Art = Be Happy.

False Cape State Park is a unique coastal wilderness located just south of VA Beach and extending to the North Carolina border. This beautiful park can only be accessed on foot, bicycle or canoe - greatly reducing the number of visitors. I should also mention that they allow camping ON The BEACH !!

The Greenbrier River Trail is a 78-mile RailTrail in some of West Virginia’s most remote areas. Passing through small towns, crossing 35 bridges, going through two tunnels, It was rated one of the top 10 hiking trails in the USA...and it's in a National Radio Quiet Zone so cell phones do not work.

I was leaving the South To fling myself into the unknown…. I was taking a part of the South To transplant in alien soil, To see if it could grow differently, If it could drink of new and cool rains, Bend in strange winds, Respond to the warmth of other suns And, perhaps, to bloom. —Richard Wright

...and poof, just like that - it's Springtime in late April. As I look ahead to warmer temps and the freedom to wear shorts and t-shirts, here is one of my favorite harbingers of Spring; the amazing "Dicentra" known as the "Bleeding Hearts", with unique, "heart"-shaped flowers.

How cold is it here in Washington D.C.? It's SO cold that the trees are beginning to look like the gnarled fingers of a cold and evil witch from a dark, frozen land. Looking forward to Springtime.

The "original" Pennsylvania Station opened in 1910 as the ultimate gateway to New York City. The waiting room was inspired by the Roman Baths of Caracalla, with a coffered 148 foot high ceiling. Passengers boarded train platforms protected by a canopy of iron and glass. By 1964 it was all gone.

Wow !! Mayan Revival is a design aesthetic that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Frank Lloyd Wright embraced this style with his majestic 1924 estate. Inspired by the Mayan temples of Uxmal, Mexico. 27,000 patterned concrete blocks were created to construct the "Ennis House" in Los Angeles.

Heads Up: Richard Serra has several amazing LARGE works at Glenstone in Potomac, MD. My favorite is "Sylvester". Sadly, Serra died earlier this year - but he leaves a collection of work that has thrilled viewers for decades, and will continue to cast a spell on any lucky soul who discovers his art.

Thomas Hart Benton (1889 – 1975) was an American painter, muralist, and printmaker. The fluid, sculpted figures in his paintings showed everyday people in scenes of life. One of his most famous murals is at S.A.A.M. next to the Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. "Achelous and Hercules"

I wanted to write a short piece of music that used breathing as a pulse. This quirky video that I shot at a local carnival was the perfect visual accompaniment. I should mention that the concession stand right behind me was selling Delicious Fried Candy Bars. Make Art, Eat Well and Be Happy.

Travelers are sometimes SO inspired by their surroundings that they must record their experience with journal entries to describe their joy with words or... perhaps with a pen and ink sketch? Here's a perfect rendering of Rue Mouffetard in Paris by my favorite local artist, Kara Petersen.

Barrier islands in South Carolina have a unique feature compared to the barrier islands in North Carolina; the "Slanted" SC coastline creates a setting sun that casts long shadows running parallel to the water, "up" the beach. My short music video celebrates this beautiful natural occurrence. Enjoy

The town square and marketplace in Saint Antonin Noble Val, a Medieval village in France is a classic gathering place. A large tree offers shade to folks relaxing at cafe tables, sipping drinks. 12th century humans created this setting, knowing full well the value of community and togetherness.

It is safe to say that improvisation, whether musical or otherwise is something we do almost everyday. Children are natural born improvisers as seen during playtime / make-believe. If we are lucky, we will carry that into our adulthood and apply it to our careers, parenting and other pursuits.

Our brain is primed early on to respond to and process music. Research has shown that day-old infants are able to detect differences in rhythmic patterns. Mothers across cultures and throughout time have used lullabies and rhythmic rocking to calm crying babies. Does music precede language?
