UK Govt rightly committed to ban new coal mines... but that must be matched with commitments to wean UK industry off coal or we're just offshoring dangers, fugitive methane, & damage in nations we import from.

Keep your eyes peeled for digital actions you can join us in 👀

We worked with Plaid Cymru to host a successful Westminster Hall debate highlighting that the UK Government's proposed 'coal ban' leaves behind a loophole🕳️ large enough for the 400,000 tonne Bedwas tips coal mining proposal to slip through. We must close it 💯

8/8: UK stats just in! Moderate decline in conversion of coal to chemicals within the UK, down to 50,000 tonnes of coal in 2024. Research & investment needed into alternative chemicals, processes, & feedstock to remove coal from chemicals industry💧 More: www.coalaction.org.uk/coal-facts-a...

7/8: UK stats just in! In 2024, the UK converted 395,000 tonnes of coal into 'minerals' (we're finding out exactly what minerals those are), down from 2023 but still significant & requires action in transferring to climate friendlier alternatives💯 More: www.coalaction.org.uk/coal-facts-a...

6/8: UK stats just in! Iron & steel industry uses the most coal after electricity generation globally. It is now the biggest user of coal in the UK. The closure & transformation of Port Talbot steelworks is largely responsible for the industry's reducing coal reliance 2023-2024

5/8: UK stats just in! In surprising progress, household reliance on coal fell by some 80% to just 41,000 tonnes of coal between 2023 and 2024🙌 Similar sharp decline 2022-2023.
Good news for both climate change & air pollution inside the home 🌍🏠 More: www.coalaction.org.uk/coal-facts-a...

3/8: UK stats just in! Whilst UK coal imports halved in 2024, our exports of coal almost doubled compared with 2023! 📈 Partly due to Ratcliffe power station selling off surplus coal stocks upon closure. Imports still outstripped exports by 700,000 tonnes www.coalaction.org.uk/coal-facts-a...

2/8: UK stats just in! Massive decline in coal mining from 506,000 in 2023 to 107,000 in 2024. This is due to closure of Ffos-y-fran opencast coal mine...but we now expect coal mining to remain the same with no further closures until 2039. www.coalaction.org.uk/coal-mining/

UK stats just in! Demand for coal in 2024 was 2.1 million tonnes, a 52% drop from 2023 📉
This decline is largely due to a 55% fall in coal-fired generation, owing to the closure of UK's last coal power station at Ratcliffe. Our stats dashboard: www.coalaction.org.uk/coal-facts-a...

Mining coal releases methane and CO2 even if it's not burned. Coal quantities used by the UK water filtration industry is not made public. But it needn't use any: alternatives incl. charcoal (wood), nutshells, glass, garnet, magnetite etc. More: www.coalaction.org.uk/2025/04/25/c...

UK brickworks primarily use coal to colour the bricks. UK brickworks consume approximately 70,000 tonnes per year of these additives, which includes coal. This drives up emissions UK emissions and pollutes our air. The industry must use alternatives: www.coalaction.org.uk/2025/04/25/c...

Gasification and chemicals: coal is used in gasification plants to produce chemicals such as methanol, ammonia, and polyvinyl chloride. LNG gas can be used instead of gas. The UK uses negligible coal for this, relying on waste/biomass instead. Read more: www.coalaction.org.uk/2025/04/25/c...
