One way to improve your self-talk is through "thought-challenging". When you have a negative or critical thought, challenge it like you are a kid that won't stop asking "why?"!

Thought: "I can't hit a backhand." 👉 Challenge: "Is that true? I'm pretty sure you've hit some backhands."

This works because self-talk influences your perception & behavior.
For example: If you tell yourself, "I can do this", your behavior more likely follows AND you will see through the "confidence-lens" instead of the "doubt-lens".
