We don’t default to saying “I don’t know” when we don’t know because human cognition is wired to generate certainty, even when it’s unwarranted. The reason is multifaceted, involving biological, cognitive, social, and evolutionary factors that shape our perception of knowledge and uncertainty.

The quality of the question determines the quality of the answer.
