Most coaches treat "balance" like it's one thing.

But there are different kinds of balance, and each demands different physical habits and practice designs.

Static. Dynamic. Reactive. Proactive.

These heat-maps are shots from a theoretical player.

Understanding this information means understanding TOUCH.

It’s not just arc — it’s how they pair arc with velocity.

New blog breaks it all down:

A still frame doesn’t tell you much about a player’s balance.

Balance is about what came before the shot, and what comes after.

Learn how to train:

Proactive balance
Reactive balance
Stability under variability

Want to improve a shooter’s balance?

Start by asking:
👉 What kind of balance do they lack?
👉 What type of variability are they facing?
👉 What habits keep them stable in motion?

This isn’t strength. It’s skill.

Very proud to announce that in Fall 2025 I will begin the process of getting a Masters Degree in Skill Acquisition through @MScSkillAcq_MTU

@DrSkillAcq has been an informal mentor of mine for several year now and can't wait to get a formal education!

That’s the magic of measuring arc + velocity.

It reveals who naturally adjusts well… and who doesn’t.

This used to be a mystery.
Now it’s a heatmap.

In the yellow/green band is where players have the most margin for error.

Great shooters live here.

But even more importantly — great touch means being able to adjust in-game:

➡️ Higher arc = might need more speed
➡️ Lower arc = might need less speed

Now add in velocity.

There isn’t one perfect speed — there’s a range of launch angles and velocities that result in a make.

They form a C-curve that is different for every combination of release height and distance.

Arc matters — we’ve all heard 45° is ideal.

But why?

Because it’s the balance between:
✅ Enough surface area to let the ball fit cleanly
✅ Enough control to manage distance

Most coaches track arc.

Almost no one tracks velocity.

But the truth is — TOUCH lives in the relationship between the two.

And once we chart it, we can see patterns we used to think were unmeasurable.

🧵 Let’s talk about measurable TOUCH:

NO TWO SHOTS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME.

Even the best shooter of all time, in the most controlled game environment, doesn't repeat the exact same shot each time.

Yes, each shot is similar, but they are all unique as well.

The ability to ADAPT is the true skill of shooting.
