Hugo Ekitike latches on to a poor pass back and rounds the St Pauli goalkeeper, with an open goal beckoning. But the French striker smacks the ball off the post. Clearly didn't want to upstage Omar Marmoush on his big day.

Football is full of interactions

Every pass, tackle, and movement impacts the game. It's not just about individual brilliance; it's how players interact within a system

That's where Positional Play comes in

It's not just a tactic; it's a philosophy rooted in Systems Theory

Big issue vs FUL was the lack of supporting fullbacks.

We were getting Saka isolated plenty but #5 at RB meant he often had to take on Robinson with no direct support, which also made Ø redundant because he was having to make passive replacement runs that removed him as a combiner around the box.

The Spurs defensive structure yesterday.

Wide crossing position

Palmer, on the ball and on his left foot.

Look at the structure in the box.

ttx - Fulham kept Arsenal at bay during this first half (1 shot and just 0.18xG from open play)

5-4-1 midblock: Close passing lanes to Ode and Saka by congesting the LHS, and force the Gunners to go to the left.

Timber's absence from RB is affecting AFC's dynamics too.

Why do teams build with the 3-1-6 as opposed to the 3-2-5?

It's usually done against teams who play two centre midfield players.

City doing it against Palace (3-4-3) with Gundo and KDB as the 1-1.

Nottingham Forest attempts to block the center of the pitch against Manchester United's box midfield with a 4-2-4 formation, with the wingers pressing from the outside. De Ligt is mostly left as a free man, and can find the dropping Hojlund or Fernandes for 3rd man combinations.

To create a successful long term process, Amorim might need to consider a switch from the 3-4-3 formation. Currently, at least on one side, width is provided by a fullback, who makes it harder to create a qualitative advantage in 1v1 situations.

Youth ⚽️ players it’s a big world out there, just because you’re the best in your team doesn’t mean you’re the best in your local area. Just because you’re the best in your local area doesn’t mean you’re the best in the country you live in.

Always look to keep improving every day!

Ruben Amorim is building on the same principles this Manchester United squad is used to but with more structured approach.

Same Up, back and through pattern we consistently saw under ETH but with more players committed to build-up and with clear positional discipline.

📝Last season, Tottenham finished with the third-highest xG conceded from set plays with 15.21, just below Burnley and United.

They’re also third this season with 5.38xG conceded, just behind Southampton and Leicester.

But apparently, Ange doesn’t need a set-pieces coach.

Even though the move feels like it's died down at this point, we're always one step ahead of them. MU are slow but also lulled into a false sense of security.

Ø at 'RB' again is the cue for #5 to move back into midfield, which creates an easy wall pass into him in the pinned flank area.

In the moments after, consistent short exchanges invites pressure that disorganises MU's shape (Bruno-Garnacho needing to switch roles but latter not complying).

No fakes in this instance but the passing is still short and very straightforward with easy access into the overload in each line.

Again, incredibly composed and well-intended mini fakes to find the right, easy-to-access spare man.

The more negative the initial false target the better because the shaping to pass & movement to receive is purely to get Utd to jump, which attackers will be susceptible to doing high up the pitch.

From here, ideally Zinchenko would be able to feed the ball across and through the lines to transition the ball into Saka.

Access wasn't always quite so straightforward but there were other usable approaches, like this diagonal attempt, supported by players in superior 2nd ball positions to Utd's.

Arsenal dominated Manchester United out of possession with their hybrid (zonal -> man to man) press, while they were constantly able to create advantages in their own build up against United's passive 5-2-3 shape (4vs3 in the first line, 3vs2 in the second line).
