At the beginning of class, when discussing ocean gyres, I share this CALVIN AND HOBBES strip and point out that the equator makes a much longer circumference trip than higher and lower latitudes. 3/N

This photo was taken at an oxbow pond at a forest preserve like 5 minutes from campus. This specific location allows me to connect (at a different scale) a concept that I talked about in the first week of class. 2/N

We completed the last field day in my ecology class today. They’ll write their final assignment on inverts collected from dip netting and berlese samples from leaf litter. It’s formatted as a letter to the head ecologist at the forest preserve district. I’ve enjoyed this class this year.

The greater Chicago area has no shortage of amazing museums/cultural institutions/ places to visit. One of my favorites is @mortonarboretum.bsky.social . We now have taken family photos every fall during “peak color” since 2014. Here are a couple of the 2025 keepers. All photos taken by me/my wife.

Gorgeous! My wife is visiting her mom there and sent this picture from today. They hiked six summits on MDI today.

This week my Ecology class read "Root contraction helps protect the “living rock” cactus Ariocarpus fissuratus from lethal high temperatures when growing in rocky soil" bsapubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... . I'm pretty happy with this slide I made to help intro the paper 1/2

In my ecology class we discussed this paper: "Changes to the elevational limits and extent of species ranges associated with climate change": onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1... . I may need to work on the design detail, but I am pretty proud of the concept for this slide I made about the paper.

So @extinctmonsters.bsky.social has a great thread about a Field museum exhibit from 1994-2004, and mentioned ridable trilobites. I went to an old photo album (not digital, film) and found a shot of me taken around 2002 (I think). This is a cicada display in the basement, not the trilobites. Bummer.

In case you missed it, this was some bad news for minority serving institutions (including the one where I work). www.nytimes.com/2025/09/10/u...

The one bit of bright news is that I took my ecology class to the Dupage River and many held a damselfly for the first time (female American rubyspot)

Saw a Chinese mantis (Tenodera sinensis) on my afternoon walk (Elmhurst, IL). The Wikipedia page has some pretty awesome photos of its predatory skills: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese...

Nice! We spotted two patches in Maine last week. One on the Schoodic peninsula (earlier in my feed) and the other in Deer Isle (pictured here)

Ghost pipe, Schoodic peninsula, Acadia national park, ME. July 8, 2025. I thought this was a mushroom, but it’s in the heath family - it’s a dicot plant that does not conduct photosynthesis.
