Pretty much the characters and the story. Given the time period, it was thought it would be "Too Girly" for US audiences. That and a lack of western marketability character or name wise, hence it being Tetris in name only and Yoshi being made the star of the whole thing.

In a way I am trying to plan to break a similar cycle starting next year that you might want to try: challenge yourself to watch one movie a day for a whole year that you haven't seen before. Still trying to build my 365 though.

Fair. Though nowadays a possibly too obvious choice in that regard would be a certain cosmic princess who will be in a movie in April [and if the sites were still up and you wanted voice synergy, Captain Marvel could have been A&C's rep]

Sadly enough, that list also counts his little sister.
Though that may be a result of Peanuts Rapid Aging, which also effected a few other characters (the last of which I think would be Rerun).

Actually Zod had been in comics since 1961, started clean shaven. Jax-Ur, who was used in Superman TAS, was more the primary Superman Kryptonian villain until Superman 78 and Terrance Stamp's portrayal.
