Ice V and ice XIII are phases of ice that don't exist on Earth outside the lab, but might be formed under the surface on Ganymede and other icy worlds in the outer solar system, where water ice plays the role silicates do in Earth's mantle. This study shows how we could detect them using infrared. 🧪
