A really hopeful part of me wants to think that Trump and co. know all of this and that this negotiation stuff is part of an elaborate reverse psychology which galvanises Europe and lures Putin in to a position of weakness, which makes his position untenable. But I haven’t actually got a clue.

Do we know what prevented it in the end, i.e was Ukraine asked to ‘pull back’ a bit? Ultimately it kind of feels like we have to let Russia win, unless we want to risk a nuclear exchange. Yet Russia is happy to accept (within reason) battlefield attrition to achieve its goals. Odd.
