In a new article with Emily Ryo, Ian Peacock, and Weston Ley, we find growing double penalties in crime-based removal proceedings, racial disparities in detention and removal outcomes, and more favorable outcomes for non-white immigrants with same-race judges:

Finally, HB 671 ("Enact the America First Act") ignores federal immigration laws and the plenary power of U.S. Congress. It aims to deter undocumented immigrants from entering or being present in OH, and somehow it requires them to leave the state <72 hrs after completing their sentence.

HB 666 ("Enact the Protecting Ohio Communities Act") is currently under review by House committee. This would limit sanctuary policies for undocumented immigrants and, as a political message, reinforce federal restrictions of immigrants' use of social services in OH. legiscan.com/OH/bill/HB66...

Next, the OH Senate already passed SB 226, and as of November the House version is still in committee. If enacted, OH will keep a registry of "foreign adversaries and other persons that...constitute a threat to the agricultural production, critical infrastructure, security, or military defense."

Lame duck session is in full swing for the Ohio General Assembly, and there are some immigration-related bills to keep an eye on. To start, HB 547 proposes to withhold state low-income housing tax credits to landlords who fail to verify tenants' immigration status: legiscan.com/OH/text/HB54...
