Really intrigued by the beginning. I think it would be even stronger to cut the third sentence -- too much info. Let us hang in the mystery for a moment. Great image, too.

I really like how you combine the themes of love and crime with a unique image in the first line. I like openings that make you wonder. Only when the magic is added to the mix I'm slightly confused.
