I'm reminded of the same when I cosplay around PWCs (pre-warp civilians) and muggles, depending on which fandom I'm cosplaying, and having to explain what I'm wearing or why. It's exhausting. Much rather cosplay around people that get it.

This is such an interesting topic, especially as a black cosplayer. It's tough for me because I do Geordi LaForge *obviously* in every version I can think of, but when I do Malfoy from HP, I do "my version" of him, and call myself BlackFoy (at least in my head) and I think it works.
