This long view is so important. But how can the government prepare the population for a better debate? We hardly ever have joined-up discussions of basic comparisons between the UK and other countries (population size, birth rate, age profile, dependency ratio, sources of growth, trade, tax base).

3. The education of all of my grandchildren was disrupted: home schooling of variable quality (from excellent to nearly absent); loss of contact with friends, little opportunity for socialisation; personal experience of COVID-19 deaths, fear for parents and relatives; impacts on mental health.
