And btw the goal doesn’t have to be growing as a person, the goal can be something selfish! The character doesn’t have to achieve their goal either, my villain tragically doesn’t realise what she needed to learn until it’s too late!

This templates good for understanding their mindset I think :)

An example, I’ll use a villain of mine!

Her goal: take from the world until she’s satisfied, she feels wronged by the world.
What’s preventing her goal: she isnt acknowledging the true cause of her misfortunes
What she needs: to move on from an unrequited love and take initiative in life

I find figuring out their motivation can help! Even just their motivation in that moment. I saw a template recently that’s helped me! It goes:
What’s this character’s goal?
What’s preventing this goal?
What do they need to achieve their goal?

And think about their feelings along each step!
