They/Them

Hobbyist writer, animator, and illustrator! Here for a silly goofy time :]
─ makes it feel cheap and flimsy. It proves that the franchise, when it tries to betray it's own meaning, can't even keep their dynamic duo apart for long enough to make it even remotely meaningful. (END)

─ humans and tricos. Something is added when the epilogue is shown, rather than taken away. This epilogue reinforces the idea that tricos and humans can work together, but it will take some work. The epilogue for HTTYD3, on the other hand, simply weakens the entire movie as a whole and─ (12/??)

─ completely forgets the scent and face of a man he had supposedly been so close to only a decade earlier. There is no reuniting between trico and the boy, but the game is left open ended so the audience can believe that eventually they will find each other again and bridge the gap between─ (11/??)

Trico is shown to have developed a family of his own as a wild animal similarly to how Toothless does, but he still remembers the boy, even after an arguably longer time. And without even SEEING the boy's face! Trico still remembers how they saved each other, while somehow Toothless─ (10/??)

The people threatening trico's life aren't big bad cartoon villains, they are protecting a child against a creature they genuinely believe is out to destroy them.

The difference in the epilogue of TLG is also key in how well the ending is executed when compared to HTTYD3 (9/??)

This works, as opposed to the excuse made up to send the dragons away, because it's been shown that the majority of humans don't work with tricos and don't understand the bond between the boy and trico. (8/??)

When it comes to TLG, however, this decision to send trico away happens quickly because it has to happen quickly or else trico will be killed by the village right in front of the boy. (7/??)

This cheap feeling is only worsened when suddenly there's a time-skip and Hiccup and Toothless are reunited again. There seems to have been no purpose to forcing all of the dragons to leave other than to make the audience cry and rip the major themes of the franchise to shreds. (6/??)

The dragons leaving Berk (and it's implied leaving the rest of the world) is the elimination of an entire order of animals from the plot. It is losing an integral part of the franchise in a flash decision that makes the choice to exile dragons feel like something shallow for shock factor. (5/??)

This key difference in the ultimate goal(s) of these medias is what makes (and breaks) their similar endings.

When we then compare the ending of HTTYD3 to the ending of TLG, there are many stark differences. (4/??)

But instead of the main goal being companionship, the overall goal in TLG is to escape the Nest. This is established from the beginning, the boy's friendship with trico is established because they HAVE to work together to survive, not because he's intrigued by tricos as a species. (3/??)

The Last Guardian, however, takes place in a time where tricos and humans are still largely at war with one another. There is no proof (other than in the boy's story) that tricos have been used as companions. Think of it as something similar to the first HTTYD movie. (2/??)

The HTTYD franchise, before the third movie, keeps this consistent theme that dragons and humans working together *works* and is an incredibly good thing. The big evils in the first two movies are defeated by humans and dragons working together hand in hand and trusting each other. (1/??)
