Just finished many hours of signing the books you all have preordered from @loyaltybooks.bsky.social. Shout out to those who got books not only for yourself but for your kids, your grandchildren, your students, and even the kid down the street who keeps riding his bike over your lawn. I’m grateful.

The young readers edition of How the Word Is Passed comes out in just 4 weeks and for this book tour I’m focusing primarily on cities in the South, visiting states where people have attempted to ban or challenge the adult version of the book.

Hope to see you out there!

What does it mean for something to be “improper” if the administration’s understanding of what is acceptable excludes anything that might make white Americans feel bad?

From one of the most formative books I read on King years ago. By the incredible scholars Tommie Shelby and Brandon Terry.

Your annual reminder that Dr. King believed in guaranteed universal basic income that gave all people a dignified life, guaranteed housing for all, guaranteed access to a high quality education, and said that “no one should be forced to live in poverty while others live in luxury.”

In 2016, I had the opportunity to be in conversation with Nikki Giovanni about her life, her work, and her friend James Baldwin. In 1973, she and Baldwin engaged in an extended conversation about race, gender, art, and politics that was taped in London and later broadcast to many around the world.
