I fucking love this stupid little chart. For its size, it punches way above its weight in terms of the anthropology and science it captures. There was a time, a long time, in which "uniform motion" was the desired characteristic of planetary motion - it was *heavenly*. But surely, truth won out...

Vicarious shamanism.

Anyone else EDC small ritual objects?

As Reader and Tanabe note of the Japanese, the spiritual is less about belief and more about ritual, custom. Thomas and Miller add: play.

Small wonder my EDC are a magatama bead, mirror, and knife.

Japanese Religion / #Zen :

Do yourself a favor: skip the shitty overviews and go straight to this masterwork. Just look at the attention to phenomenology here!

Sengoku Period History ( #Shogun fans, these are for you):
* "African Samurai" by Thomas Lockley (this is historical fiction but the extended notes - which you get as a PDF with the audiobook too - demonstrate Lockley's seriousness)
* "A History of the Samurai" by Jonathan Lopez-Vera

One more in General History:
* "History of Japan in Manga" by Kanaya Shunichiro

Not a deep dive on its own, but some of the visuals in here are immensely clarifying as you continue your studies (e.g. this graphic on bakumatsu alliances)

Is this not one of the most kick-ass scientific visualizations you've ever seen? It's a periodic table, and the first thing to note is it's a left step periodic table. But most strikingly, electronegativity is shown as a contour map, with toponomy inspired by physical maps. Brilliant.

What do y'all like to collect? I collect knives, mostly pocket knives. This is a great hobby (1) because knives are useful tools, and (2) as a type of meditation on life...

Kanji question! Why are the cursive-style kanjis on the top of these shogi pieces different if they both supposedly mean "dragon"? For the promoted rook "dragon king" piece, I can see 龍. But what is that kanji on the promoted bishop "dragon horse"?? Thanks! #kanji #shogi

The continued fraction expansion of the golden ratio (phi) is all 1's. The continued fraction expansion of 48/phi is [1 1 1 106 1 1 1 106 1 1 1...] (non-repeating). Interesting indeed!

My kid's letter to Santa reminded me of Dennett "Real magic, in other words, refers to the magic that is not real, while the magic that is real, that can actually be done, is not real magic." Ie everything we've ever known, including the fantastical, is of this world #Dennett #magic #Santa

Storyboard cuts from what is by far my favorite movie, The Wind Rises. The movie was exquisitely researched. The NACA M9 and M12 airfoils mentioned are real airfoils. The calculations shown, however, are gibberish ;-)

The triangular relationship between symbols, concepts, and objects is pregnant with philosophy. What I'm sitting with right now is a new motto: "no extension without intension". [1/4]

According to Heil, qualities of objects are identical with dispositions. They co-occur. Heil notes he did not consider abstract objects. If Heil is right, perhaps abstract objects are those whose qualities are NOT dispositions: they are causes of nothing. The constellation Orion would be one such...

When Merleau-Ponty says: "The painter 'takes his body with him,' says Valery. Indeed, we cannot imagine how a mind could paint."

He doesn't just mean the trivial thing - that the mind doesn't have arms. He means, a disembodied mind doesn't have *a view*. Thus mind as we know it REQUIRES body.
