These values represent anomalies of +5 to +6 °C above the climatological average for this time of year, with record-breaking warmth in the Balearic Sea. Winter temperatures have also been persistently above the historical, putting marine species and ecosystems at risk.

Climate tipping point interactions and cascades: a review
Abstract. Climate tipping elements are large-scale subsystems of the Earth that may transgress critical thresholds (tipping points) under ongoing global warming, with substantial impacts on the biosph...

Recent studies raise a critical concern: tipping element interactions may lead to tipping cascades, where the collapse of one system accelerates failures in others. For instance, a collapsed AMOC could both dry the Amazon and speed up Greenland Ice Sheet melting.

Once triggered, these shifts can cause abrupt and irreversible changes, with severe impacts on ecosystems and human societies.

While research has advanced our understanding of individual events, their interactions—and the potential for one tipping event to trigger others—remain poorly understood.

More than 80% of the world’s reefs hit by bleaching after worst global event on record
An ashen pallor and an eerie stillness all that remains where there should be fluttering fish and vibrant colours in the reefscape, one conservationist says

🌊 Why It Matters

Coral reefs support 25% of all marine species and sustain the livelihoods of 1 billion people through fisheries, tourism, and coastal protection. As reefs turn ghostly white and die, we face cascading losses in biodiversity, food security, and coastal resilience.

Iconic ecosystems like Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and Indonesia’s Raja Ampat, once considered thermal refuges, are now bleaching alongside even the remotest atolls of the Chagos Islands.
