I hear you. It runs deep. The rugged, individualistic culture of cowboys and self-made millionaires free from government oversight.

But it did not come about naturally. It was carefully cultivated by ideologies and oligarchs.

A new term came to mind while watching the video: "Us Vs Thim." Us is the collective common good; "thim" is the collective self-interest.

Self-interest (power, profit, prestige) requires building a community of selfishness. An ironic, yet apparently successful strategy.

As a Canadian, I had the honour of being on a USIA environmental tour for European representatives. Amazing experience. The cultivation of grassroots connections and understanding is precisely what good governments do, and bad ones destroy.

But most important is our common values, in particular as a compassionate and caring society and country.

We are far from perfect, both now and throughout our history. We have much work to do, but at least we have a strong foundation to build upon.

There's so much to love about Canada, especially our awesome natural areas, our vibrant cities and communities, our culture and cultural diversity, and our strong social support systems, in particular universal health care.
