On the 50th anniversary of its sinking, many are remembering the crew who lost their lives, considering the theories around the structural cause of the vessel’s demise, and the weather conditions of not only this event but the climate of the Great Lakes this time of year.

For the Edmund Fitzgerald, and from a climate/weather standpoint, it seems to boil down to being in the wrong place at the wrong time. As for the structural failure of the vessel, there are many theories as to why it sunk and sunk quickly.

Hultquist et al. (2006)’s simulation had average wave heights over 20 feet with the potential of waves 10s of feet higher. The waves were also moving from west to east, which is virtually unheard of in the climatology when considering the heights experienced on this particular evening.

So, what made this storm different enough to bring down a relatively large ship? First, the ships position was less than ideal. It was located in a region with enhanced winds and maximum fetch, that is, the distance across the lake. A large fetch means that there are larger waves.

Climatologically speaking, Fall is the season where strong storms such as this develop the most. Warm, moist, air from the Gulf of Mexico collides with cold, arctic air moving south from Canada. Low pressure systems form and intensify, particularly when they move over the warm Great Lakes.

However, conditions were ripe for the storm to rapidly strengthen while the ship shifted to sail toward the southeast. Conditions worsened and, eventually, another crew that maintained contact with the Edmund Fitzgerald lost contact when it seemed to have sunk abruptly.

The particular storm that brought down the Edmund Fitzgerald is nicely summarized in Hultquist et al. (2006). A low pressure system formed in the Great Plains and moved Northeast toward the Great Lakes. Originally, the crew thought that a northern route would shield them from the worst of the storm.

This may be spooky news, but remember one of the best things we can do to combat climate change is talk about it. So keep talking about it and if you need a conversation starter, feel free to use one of these Fun Fact Friday posts!

To make matters worse, this warming was found to occur between October and March: the peak cacao harvest season. This can reduce the availability of cacao for candy production and increase Halloween candy prices.

Of course we also cannot forget the impacts on Halloween chocolate. In two of the most prolific cacao-producing countries, Ghana and the Ivory Coast, climate change has increased days above 89.6°F by three weeks each year.

This may not seem like a lot, but even this amount of average warming can make a difference. Those colorful fall leaves we love to see during spooky season for example, depend in part on cooler nights. (Checkout our Fun Fact Friday from September 5th for more about fall foliage).
