A lot has changed in manufacturing in the past 30 years since NAFTA was signed. Automation is responsible for most of the decline in manufacturing jobs in this country. We produce more manufactured goods now than ever, but with robots instead of people. Tariffs won’t change that.

America’s manufacturing output is at an all time high. The divergence between the green and blue lines in the graph below is automation. The tariffs won’t “bring back” manufacturing jobs. It will replace manufacturing jobs elsewhere with capital investment here.
