This particular set of geographical cards can be dated to somewhere around 1807, as Michigan was admitted as a territory in 1805 and the 1810 population was 4,762, around 1,500 higher than the population shown on the card.

Movable books can be found going back centuries, and became more common for children’s books in the mid-18th century and early 19th century. They can be thought of as early pop-up books!

This book, published three years before the passage of the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery, is an example of abolitionist literature aimed at a younger audience. Just like today, children’s literature of the past grappled with relaying age-appropriate messages about contemporary issues.
