2 hrs later, I realized I missed cut 13 fat quarters, and now i don't have enough to make two leaves per color.

Yeaaahhhhh. When I was working on it, I quickly realized how painfully 4in squares are. Next time, I'm totally doing 10in squares. lol

Welcome! That's just what I've seen online in various tutorials. I think rag quilts are one of those 'whatever works' things. I'm happy that it turned out well!

From what i understand, it's not required. You can use flannel as an inner layer as well as the outer or cotton batting. Just make sure whatever you use is 1 inch smaller than your outer squares so it won't be included in your seam allowance
