Just here for the resistance vibes
I’m a few decades from 74 yet, but I’ve been leaving our Ohio senators daily voicemails for a couple weeks now. I use the 5 Calls app, which generates a nice script for me so I don’t go off the rails and angrily insult them 😂

Almost got into a physical altercation with a man in a hospital waiting room who was watching videos on his phone at full volume. I countered by playing Tampax videos and Teenage Dirtbag at full volume. He had the gall to tell me to “get some fucking manners” when I called him out for his behavior.

Can’t commit to making several calls today? No problem - take baby steps. Download the app. Get comfy seeing it on your phone as a nagging reminder. A week from now, when you’re feeling stronger, open the app. Another few days, make a single call. Graduate to several calls a day. I believe in you!

I don’t think enough of us sit back and take the time to do that. We can’t improve if we aren’t willing to examine what we’re doing and consider other viewpoints or new information and evolve accordingly.

And no, you won’t change my condescending attitude by arguing in bad faith in a point to derail.

Partly because I don’t have one, but mostly because I’m clearly better than you.

That’s a joke. But I expect you’ll miss the point.

Bringing semantics to an otherwise interesting dialogue because you can’t resist inserting yourself by missing the point entirely.
These terms have largely been replaced. Saying “used to use” as is apt. We used to use maiden regularly. Some still use it, but it’s not common. See the difference?

I’m not seeing what your take is bringing to the discussion. There’s an honest dialogue happening here and you’re sticking your nose in to throw insults. How is that contributing any more than what you’re replying to? You’re just pot stirring.

And people absolutely still use all sorts of slurs. That was the point being made. Keep up sparky.

Janitor doesn’t fit as well as the others. Clearly I was not referring to heads of government departments with secretaries. And stewardess is an outdated term for sure. My point remains - as language evolves, who defines when a term should no longer be used? What’s the critical mass for updating?
March 12, 2025 at 1:04 PM
We used to use “janitor” now it’s “custodian.” “Secretary” is now “receptionist.” “Stewardess” became “flight attendant.” Are you principled on those because some of the elderly still use them? Your “principled” take seems like you making excuses to continue using a single word. It’s… a stretch.

Words & language are ever evolving. Feeble & hysterical could also be included. How many words must be “agreed upon” and by what % of people before you update your language? Because the R word is pretty well agreed upon at this point: It’s offensive, unnecessary, lazy, lacks imagination. Why use it?

Honest question…. To me it’s a matter of impact on others. If a trans person asks you not to dead name or use their old pronouns, is that different than a person with Downs Syndrome asking you not to use the term retard in a derogatory way? Is it worth hurting innocents to hang on to that principle?

While I agree with the sentiment, there are plenty of things he could be called without using a slur.
