It’s an expensive program with barely any benefit. The fee for the card is minuscule compared to the cost of administration. Even setting this issue aside, it’s inefficient.

They would be better off rolling the benefits into regular Canadian passports and the kiosks, with risk assessment.

That said if they want to cut programs to save money, this is one that wouldn’t really hurt that much.

Especially since it is next to useless going into the U.S. anyway. I never had any difference in the questions asked. It only really made a difference going into Canada.

The amount of money wasted by governments to save/create jobs in the private sector is staggering when the public sector and infrastructure knobs are RIGHT there.

Thank you for doing this work. I know how exhausting it can be. It’s so important for us.

Same, the only reason I am hesitant to renounce is I worry that if I did have to visit the U.S., I at least have some extra protection visiting as a citizen. At the moment though, I really don’t know when I’ll see my family again.

Which really sucks, I have such a supportive and wonderful family.

Government vibe coding is an idea that elicits genuine horror in me.

I am in the same boat, although my passport was updated before these changes. Still, I am extremely hesitant to travel to the U.S. and am somewhat tempted to just renounce at this point given everything going on and the tax complications for TFSAs, RRSPs, etc.

Have you given it any thought?

The pages the links would’ve gone to have broken links now coming from search engines. I don’t really know how you manage that without doing it deliberately. This is super weird.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Visa and Mastercard were reacting to private government pressure more than the public group claiming responsibility.

Unfortunately yes. It’s already a damaged democracy, but I worry that the next midterms are really the only chance to save American democracy. I don’t have much hope.

The time to have disagreements over policy decisions is during the primary. Once the nominee is chosen, that’s it. They’re the only option.

I honestly don’t know at this point. Everything that has happened this year has been beyond my expectations that I can’t pretend to imagine what the future may look like in say 5 years. Could look like legal attacks and trumped up investigations of political enemies to something like secret police.
August 6, 2025 at 2:56 AM
This reminds me that I was wondering if you ever get worried that the administration may come after you at some point?
August 6, 2025 at 2:51 AM
I used to think it was mostly lies but the way I’ve seen Putin and others manage him, I think he genuinely believes the stuff he says.

It feels like Fox News is obsessing over this far far more than the left is. 🤨

British govt probably: “Oh no, I guess we have to ban positive discussions of minorities on social media now.”

I honestly don’t know what the solutions are at this point.

This was started by the French, Germans, Spanish, British, Jordanians, Emirati, and Egyptians. Canada following along? That does sound very Canadian.

It’s honestly what bugs me when folks talk about things like they’re a joke and dismiss people as being too woke. We need to nip these things in the bud.
August 4, 2025 at 2:20 PM
I was sitting here yesterday just thinking, how many years will it take til there’s no more forests left to burn?
August 4, 2025 at 1:29 PM
For sure, just saying I didn’t really put it out there as a general question. I know what many people think. I’m curious what Tom thinks because he knows politics better than many.
August 4, 2025 at 1:28 PM
What would you suggest is a winning strategy? I’m sure you’ve spoken to it before but it’s been awhile since I’ve seen anyhow.
August 4, 2025 at 12:34 PM
You’re not wrong, it’s just yet another thing that pushes families out of urban areas and into suburbs because once you have a car living in an urban area makes a lot less sense usually. It’s a policy choice, ultimately.
