It should go without saying that there are many wonderful parents of disabled people who do not do this. However if your instinct is to get defensive about this thread then you might be who this thread is about.

I hope that any parents of disabled children out there reading this will see that this pattern exists in your community and take great care not to fall into these traps. In the end the only person who can truly speak about life with disability is *a disabled person*.

These are folks who talk over any disabled person they encounter to demonstrate their knowledge of lived disabled experiences. They speak for their children and diminish that child’s existence by inflating their own egos. They brag about their advocacy for the community while they do so so much harm

Here’s a quick tip for everyone: the proper response to a disabled person saying “abled society is awful about this” is: I need to look out for that and make sure I’m not doing it and stand up to anyone that is.

The improper response is: “no they’re not.”
