"Electricity is the ultimate perishable good"

No longer. Batteries will change the solar harvest, in the same way silos and refrigeration changed the food harvest... but over years, not decades 🔋🍏

"Silos for Sunshine": a great new thoughtpiece💡

There are LOTS (88!) more countries with potential for offshore wind --- which could lead to further growth in the future--

--including 9 who are already members of the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA)

11 US state targets...
October 30, 2025 at 8:12 AM
In addition there are 27 **sub** national targets...

Including in all 11 Chinese coastal provinces
October 30, 2025 at 8:12 AM
A total of 2⃣7⃣ countries have set national targets for offshore wind, of which...
2⃣2⃣ have a 2030 target
1⃣8⃣ have a post-2030 target
7⃣ have specific floating offshore wind targets
October 30, 2025 at 8:12 AM
NEW: Global offshore wind targets will help to propel a tripling of global offshore wind capacity in just 6 years💪

Although many countries may achieve their 2030 target slightly later than planned, the US is the only country that has effectively deserted its target...🧵

Is 2026 the coming-of-age of the industrial heat pump?

I really liked this technology tracker...

In the EU, a cold, dry and unwindy Q1 led to low renewables generation, which would be expected to bounce back.

The summer in India was less severe than in 2024, which (alongside weaker industrial growth) saw electricity demand growing slowly...
October 7, 2025 at 6:06 AM
In India, coal generation FELL unexpectedly... but that was partly due to low demand growth caused by milder weather...
October 7, 2025 at 6:06 AM
India, meanwhile had a bumper solar and wind 6 months...
October 7, 2025 at 6:06 AM
That's 2 quarters in row of falling gas generation... but at the expense of rising coal generation...
October 7, 2025 at 6:06 AM
In the US, it's a very different picture... there is little wind growth, and solar growth is far from covering fast-rising electricity demand.

Also higher gas prices meant switching to more dirtier coal generation.

Is China's coal falling structurally? It's hard to call that - but it's definitely at a plateau...
October 7, 2025 at 6:06 AM
In China, coal fell because of the extraordinary growth in solar - but also in wind...

Enough to push coal use DOWN in China AND India...
October 7, 2025 at 6:06 AM
And solar capacity new-build in 2025 is beating all records AGAIN:
October 7, 2025 at 6:06 AM
Solar in some countries is now over a QUARTER of total electricity supply in the first half of the year...
October 7, 2025 at 6:06 AM
Because SOLAR AND WIND more-than met the rise in global electricity demand in the first half of this year...

NEW: GLOBAL RENEWABLES OVERTAKES COAL

How the heck did that happen so quickly?!...🧵

China cleantech is shaping Africa's energy🌍

In August, for the first time, Africa imported more $ of EV's from China than it did solar panels🚗🚗🚗
October 6, 2025 at 4:13 PM
And of course the biggest meta story of them all, which
@akshatrathi.bsky.social reported on today:

Chinese clean tech exports exceed US fossil fuel exports..

Belgium is one of the world's biggest importers of Chinese EV's at the moment, as its company car tax perks make it generous to shift to EV's...

India is now importing more $ m of batteries than solar..

..in part because it's ramping up its solar manufacturing, and also now installing more grid batteries.
