@cleanenergycanada.org
One of Canada's leading clean energy think tanks. Based at Simon Fraser University. We share stories tracking the technologies and policies accelerating Canada's transition to a clean-powered economy.
As our chart shows, per-capita emissions have been trending down—especially since the introduction of B.C.’s carbon tax in 2008 (the consumer portion of which was recently eliminated) and again following the launch of a comprehensive climate plan in 2018.

A new poll finds that a "very strong majority" of Canadians ultimately support keeping in place a version of Canada’s EV Availability Standard—so the right question for Mark Carney is how the policy should adapt, not whether it should exist, says @trevormelanson.bsky.social👇

🔌NEW: Our new study with Abacus Data finds that the reason Canadians aren't adopting clean technologies even faster isn't for a lack of interest—they are keen on them—but structural barriers that get in the way.

🇪🇸🇮🇹 Madrid was the most severely affected in relative terms, with 90% of the excess heat-related deaths attributable to climate change.

On absolute terms, Milan was hardest hit, with more than 300 deaths that would not have occurred without climate change.

Electrification also transforms people's daily lives for the better—freeing up more of one's income once spent on energy for other things while delivering cleaner vehicles that charge while parked, as well as smarter, more efficient homes that don't have to pollute to keep those inside comfortable.
June 25, 2025 at 8:20 PM
The good news is that key electrification technologies are proving to be commercial successes, with the market for EVs and heat pumps already three times the size of that for wind turbines and solar panels. By 2035, this gap is expected to widen starkly.

As @ember-energy.org's new analysis finds, 60% of primary energy for transport, buildings, and industry—like fuel for a diesel truck—is consumed before ever passing through the electricity sector.

Clean electricity "cannot displace fossil fuels in these sectors unless end uses are electrified."
June 25, 2025 at 8:20 PM
🔌🚗 While less conspicuous than the global race to generate electricity from renewables, the race to electrify our lives and economies is equally pivotal.

Both are underway, but electrification is further along—and the more consequential race today, says @ember-energy.org.

🇨🇦 Two-thirds (67%) of Canadians say that Canada should prioritize developing clean energy over fossil fuels while 70% support the inclusion of heat pumps and EV charging in new homes if costs are minimal, finds a new poll from Clean Energy Canada and Abacus Data.

🔌👨‍👩‍👧 What's more, despite a decline in interest since 2022, 45% of Canadians still say they are certain, very likely, or inclined to purchase an EV as their next car—a belief that rises to 55% in the GTHA and 69% in Metro Vancouver.

🚗💰 Our new poll with Abacus Data finds that a majority of Canadians (53%) would prefer a lower tariff on Chinese EVs to balance industry protection with consumer affordability, similar to Europe. In contrast, only 19% say they would prefer to keep the existing 100% tariff in place👇

🇨🇦🍃 NEW REPORT: According to a new Clean Energy Canada analysis, Canada's 10 largest non-U.S. trade partners all have net-zero commitments and carbon pricing systems, while roughly half apply carbon border adjustments on imports and have domestic EV requirements.

As @cagbc.org research shows, for an efficient building in a city with low-carbon electricity, embodied emissions are the greatest source of lifetime emissions. As Canada sets out to build millions of new homes, cleaner construction is necessary to minimize pollution.

Using cleaner drywall, for instance, can achieve emissions reductions of up to 55% with consistently zero added material and budget costs. For structural steel, the climate impact is even greater.
