Suncor's newly uprated gas-fired Base Plant in Alberta ramped up to over 500 MW...

... OPG's Pickering Unit 4, non-emitting CANDU nuclear, readied for final departure from the grid, after nearly 50 years of service

Alberta's electricity grid is nearly entirely fossil fuel-powered, with baseload demand often over 10,000 MW.

Nuclear-izing that could avoid 53 million tons of CO2 emissions yearly, but AB's growing reliance on gas-fired cogeneration for baseload supply makes decarbonization impossible.

... and they're climbing the stairway to heaven (-ly disinterest in nuclear power)

Suncor Base Plant's output until Oct 10 was never more than ~ 40 MW, from 50 MW capacity.

On Oct 10, capacity jumped to 453 MW, then Nov 9 to 856 MW.

Output appears climbing to around 50-60% of that.

Gas fired.

Or, the Canadian nuclear industry's success in penetrating the Alberta process heat and power gen market

FYI, Suncor Base Plant runs on gas

Here's how the Quebec drought affected Ontario's electricity trade with Quebec, Feb 2024 vs Feb 2023.

Less exports to NY and Michigan in 2024, because more exports to Quebec -- NOT, as CP claims, because of low hydro in Ontario.

Ontario imports from QC way down in 2024, virtually non-existent.
