The dirty little secret about the Daily News under Alden is that it's profitable. Heath Freeman, the hedge fund's owner, has kept the newsroom closed, sold the printing plant and let jobs die through attrition. He's wrought terror on the city's civic infrastructure.

Alden spent huge sums of money on white glove law firms to fight this union, while allowing the newsroom to rot. Their fight isn't over, but this contract sets a terrific precedent to bring more resources to not just the Daily News, but to Alden-owned newsrooms everywhere.
