Edgeworthia is probably my favourite winter flowering shrub but I don’t find it easy on dry sand and so have it in a large container. The flowers make me think of those wonderful star-burst fireworks…

It’s time at Hemingford Grey to make way for new growth and early bulbs and cut back last year’s stems, a job that is done gradually and leads us into spring. Stack them somewhere if you can until mid-spring to allow overwintering bugs to emerge, them compost them.
