Soon as I'm home from work this is going to be one of the first things I dive into. Thanks!

With a large player pool (some nights I'll have upwards of a dozen players sitting around the tables) I like having them communicate with each other as much as possible. It's an arcade bar, so having them engaged with each other instead of staring at the Street Fighter cabinet is a plus. 😄

A technique I learned to make large-scale battles is to look at squads of enemies as single monsters. Their hp essentially becomes just the number of units in the squad. Give it multiattack that it loses after losing a set amount of hp. Regrouping is just shuffling a couple of numbers around.

The group initiative rules are on reddit. DnD Shorts did a video on them. The players go then the baddies. Players can coordinate their action economies as they see fit. The minions rules are from 4e. I've seen the A5E site but have the core book. Will def dive more into the site though.

I use a mix of house rules like group initiative and minions to help combat encounters run smoothly and allow a greater teamwork dynamic. A lot of the complex things they want as players I try to include as downtime activities. An example is modified rules for strongholds from Level Up A5E.

For a 5e game, definitely. My original intent, when asked to host games there, was to run things like Grant Howitt's one page rpgs or an OSR game like Shadowdark. The players showing up wanted a good 5e game, though, so I developed a West Marches style campaign that they've been enjoying.
